High Efficiency Momentum Wheel for Micro Satellites

Technology Overview

Researchers at the University of Houston have devised a new momentum wheel for micro satellites. The invention is a momentum wheel that uses the interaction between a high temperature superconductor and a permanent magnet, to produce a totally passive levitated wheel. This process is better than currently used methods: (1) the wheel may be as light as 1 - 2 kg; (2) it can rotate between 3-10 thousand RPM; and (3) only a fraction of a watt is needed to keep the wheel rotating at top speed. The direct benefit of the system is overcoming a major obstacle on shrinking the size of micro satellites. The applications for this technology are in any industry, which uses satellites - communications, security, etc.
The researchers have reached a prototype level of development for this technology.
